about my absence from this website...

back in january, my health really collapsed. i've been in and out of the hospital, wore a foley catheter for almost 3 months, had two operations, and, in addition, had to struggle with a serious, indeed life-threatening infection. i normally weigh about 140lbs, but at one point a few months ago, i was down to 122.  my last hospitalization was back in march, but i've been home for the last month where i've been slowly recuperating. i feel much stronger, and have recently even been able to resume my regimen of daily 1 to 4 mile walks. sadly, there are still some health issues i have to face in the near future, but at the moment, i'll let the future take care of itself.

i have no real inspirational message to give anyone, but i will say that one is either committed to living one's life, or one isn't. and the means through which that occurs can be art, love, or just wanting to give death a big F*CK YOU! in my case, it was a combination of all three.

of course, despite, or perhaps, even because of what i've been through, i kept writing and making little electronic pictures. in fact, i recently completed another chapbook of poetry. it's entitled a book between day. most of it was written in the late summer and fall of 2017, but i did most of the editing and revision in february of this year when i was struggling with a very serious case of clostridium difficile, which made for a very arduous, but nonetheless interesting experience. anyway, you can read it here:

well, don't worry, i'll be in touch...

I'M BA-ACK!

normally, i don't like to talk about my personal life or the state of my health in these journals, so let me just say that for the last few months, i've been very ill, and was unable to really do much here on this website. but i seem to be making something of a recovery, so once again, i'll be uploading some artwork. i'll try shooting for once or twice a week, and hopefully, i'll be able to pick up the tempo again.

however, i have posted a new chapbook of poetry. it's called danses and can be found here:

archive.org/details/Danses3

actually, i wrote this work about a year ago. it's the sequel to the later dithyrambs.

as a matter of fact, i've also written a sequel to the sequel, which i will be posting early next month. if you can, please take a look. i think they both contain some of my best writing.

well, my computer--an old lenovo laptop--crashed (the screen went dead), so i'm currently using my girlfriend's old mac. unfortunately, it doesn't have my files nor any of the programs i normally use for my art work on it, which explains why i haven't posted anything for a while. and, i just got a call from the computer repair shop telling me that they've had to special order a part they need, so it won't be ready till sometime next week. of course, what with the (slim) possibility of hurricane joaquin barreling up the chesapeake bay as far north as baltimore, i may be out of commission for a while longer. we'll see. awfully sorry about this. i've really grown used to creating and posting my work here on da on a much more frequent basis. as a matter of fact, i almost feel like i'm going through withdrawal. but i'll still keep checking in from time to time.

so everyone, take care. and if you think you might be in the hurricane's path--START MAKING YOUR PREPARATIONS NOW!!! i'm not kidding. having lived through various disasters before, it doesn't hurt to be over-prepared. i'm about to head out to the store right now and stock up on a few essential items. see you soon?

i think of my pictures as dramas; the shapes in the pictures are the
performers. they have been created from the need for a group of
actors who are able to move dramatically without embarrassment and
execute gestures without shame.
neither the action nor the actors can be anticipated, or described in
advance. they begin as an unknown adventure in an unknown space. it
is at the moment of completion that in a flash of recognition, they are
seen to have the quantity and function which was intended. ideas and
plans that existed in the mind at the start were simply the doorway
through which one left the world in which they occur.
the great cubist pictures thus transcend and belie the implications of
the cubist program.
the most important tool the artist fashions through constant practice
is faith in his ability to produce miracles when they are needed...

from mark rothko's 1947 essay "the romantics were prompted", first published in the journal possibilities, vol. 1, no. 1

it's all falling from the hand again. a loud thump. parts of the city, an aerial
edge, a disjunctive "and", and our misspelled adventures, shaking the
simulacra and smart-mouthing the zha-zure—that's articulation. the gesture
is so expansive. now that i think of it, walking is more like an accordion, a
long stretch through the nunc stans and various stalled vehicles. or a way to
be a long side of the now, this now in transit. its glass breaking solidity, its
similarity with what was said and what wasn't. and what is is our refusal to
remain. still. or some kind of joy. crowded and ringing, every day equals
every other, an opening an announcing a long appearance. or else a moment
of silence, like a phonograph. i should be shouting something here, but
without any periods

portrait of my eyes

older than sleep

we will be hungry again

twisted hum

enormous juxtaposition

and bang of head

less indefinite than obliged

lost in the living room

unearthing a map in the mouth

colors change

the leaves never fall

i no longer mourn the missing systems

operating air

acting out a place

an excerpt from my new chapbook the later dithyrambs. i think it contains some of my best writing--dense, but highly mobile, like a bass clarinet solo by eric dolphy.

you can read it here:
